Club History


The club was formed in 1970, and currently boasts over 450 players ageing from 5 - 17 years old. We see ourselves as an integral part of the community with an aim to providing the opportunity for players with a broad range of ability to play and enjoy the game of football and to encourage the development of skills and team spirit.

We are known as a friendly, well-supported club, with a reputation for fair play and we sincerely hope you see this through your contact with the Club. We aim to keep to these principles and not become a `win at all costs` type of club.

In 2003 we embarked on a grand plan to restructure and take the club forward, enlarging the committee, getting more parents involved, training coaches etc. The result of this was that in 2004 we had grown in stature from a small sleepy club to receiving the prestigious FA Charter Standard Development Club Award, making us one of a handful of youth football clubs to receive this accolade in Hertfordshire.

Community Charter Club Award

In the summer of 2010 Welwyn Pegasus FC was awarded Community Club status. This fantastic news endorsed the plans and development ideas that the club have been building for many years. This accreditation is welcome news not just for the club but also for the entire community as it will help all football players (current and future) in the area and from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.

The FA Community Club scheme builds upon the foundations of the Charter Standard scheme in placing clubs at the heart of their community.

Community status is deemed the pinnacle of the club development pathway and requires a club to have a high quality, multi-team (minimum of 10 teams) set up with excellent social, training and playing opportunities for all. As such, the number of Community Clubs is one of the truest measures of success for The FA Football Development strategy, today there are just 7 across Hertfordshire.

All new FA Community Clubs are required to meet rigorous new FA criteria, ensuring they provide opportunities for players irrespective of age, gender, religion and ability. Clubs must also provide qualified coaches, first aiders and child protection officers.

The club is delighted to receive this new recognition and promise to build upon the platform already established for many years to come.

How the club got its name
There are probably few people who know why our club adopted the name `Pegasus`.


Here`s the story

As everyone is aware, England won the world cup in 1966 which sparked a huge growth in football in this country. This was particularly apparent among young people. At this stage there were no local leagues to play in, the kids would just kick a ball about in the street or at the park.

At Welwyn playing fields the village kids would meet up and totally unstructured games of up to 20 a-side would be played. The first step to something becoming organised was when these park kick abouts evolved into semi-serious matches between the Queensway housing estate and the Hawbush estate.

It was after one of these `inter estate` matches that a group of parents were in The Steamer pub on a Sunday lunchtime and the conversation got round to the kid's football. The idea of raising a `village` youth team was mooted, which received a very positive response. Co-incidentally, a group of soldiers from the army airborne (parachute) regiment were in the pub at the same time, and such was their interest that they immediately took up a collection, which raised a significant amount to buy some kit and equipment.

Following on from the pub discussions an informal meeting was arranged at which volunteers came forward to form a club committee and act as managers and coaches. It was decided to run teams at under 12 and under

14 age groups and apply for membership of the newly formed Mid Herts Rural Minor League.

The question of a club name and badge was raised and it was decided that in recognition of the initial input of the airborne soldiers, the club could use their `flying horse` emblem for the badge and the name `Pegasus` be adopted. (From the winged horse in Greek mythology).

Thus a club was founded, which has grown over the past forty years to what we have today.
